SIAM Report: Scooters Overtake Motorcycles in Q1 FY27 as SUVs Dominate Car Sales

TL;DR

SIAM reports that Indian scooter sales surpassed motorcycles in Q1 FY27 with a 30.8% surge, while SUVs continued to lead the car market with a 28.6% growth.

According to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on July 15, Indian consumers purchased more scooters than motorcycles during the April-June quarter of fiscal year 2027. Scooter sales surged by 30.8% to 21,78,858 units, compared to 16,65,180 units sold in the corresponding period last year. In contrast, motorcycle sales saw a more modest increase of 14%, reaching 33,08,847 units in Q1 FY27. The report also highlighted the continued dominance of SUVs in the car market, with sales of utility vehicles growing by an impressive 28.6% to 8,61,918 units in the same quarter. This growth was against 6,70,120 units sold in the previous year's Q1. Overall auto sales experienced a robust growth of 21.4% to 73,81,656 units in Q1 FY27. SIAM attributes this sustained demand to factors such as the impact of GST 2.0, improved financing options, and reasonable inflation rates.
