TL;DR
Indian EV startups met with Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to request an extension of the PM E-DRIVE scheme and revisions to the PLI Auto scheme to boost domestic manufacturing and adoption.
Founders of prominent Indian electric vehicle (EV) startups, including Ather Energy, Matter, River, Euler Motors, and Raptee, recently convened with Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy in Bengaluru. The primary agenda of the meeting was to advocate for crucial policy adjustments aimed at bolstering the domestic EV manufacturing ecosystem and accelerating adoption across the nation.
The startups collectively requested an extension of the PM E-DRIVE (Electric Drive) incentive scheme, which plays a vital role in bridging the price gap between electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Additionally, they urged for revisions to the existing Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Auto scheme, seeking modifications that would better accommodate newer, technology-focused companies and integrate more domestic players. These policy changes are seen as essential for providing long-term stability for capital-intensive manufacturing and research and development investments.
Industry leaders emphasized that expanding the PLI Auto scheme to include more new-age manufacturers would facilitate economies of scale, enabling them to compete globally and significantly increase 'value addition' within India. Such governmental support and policy predictability are crucial for attracting further investments and aligning with the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' vision, while accelerating India's progress towards its 2070 net-zero emissions targets.
