India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways plans an Aadhaar-like unique ID for EV batteries to enhance traceability and recycling efficiency.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in India has put forward a proposal to introduce a unique identification number, similar to Aadhaar, for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This initiative, detailed in draft guidelines, aims to enhance the traceability and efficiency of recycling processes for EV batteries across their lifecycle.
Under the proposed framework, EV battery manufacturers or importers would be mandated to assign a 21-character Battery Pack Aadhaar Number (BPAN) to every battery introduced to the market, including those used for internal consumption. This BPAN would capture and store crucial information from raw material sourcing and manufacturing to usage, recycling, or eventual disposal.
The system is designed to foster greater transparency, accountability, and sustainability within the battery ecosystem by enabling precise tracking of battery performance and environmental impact. It is also anticipated to play a significant role in facilitating second-life usage of batteries, ensuring regulatory compliance, and streamlining efficient recycling efforts.
