Delhi Unveils Ambitious EV Policy to Accelerate Transition Towards Zero-Emission Mobility

TL;DR

Delhi's new EV Policy 2.0, effective July 1, 2026, sets aggressive targets for phasing out fossil fuel two- and three-wheelers by 2028 through incentives and infrastructure development.

Delhi has introduced an ambitious new electric vehicle (EV) policy, effective July 1, 2026, aiming to drastically reduce vehicular pollution and phase out fossil fuel vehicles. The EV 2.0 policy outlines firm timelines, prohibiting the registration of new fossil fuel three-wheelers from January 1, 2027, and new fossil fuel two-wheelers from April 2028. This comprehensive initiative expands financial incentives for electric vehicle adoption and includes substantial investments in developing a robust charging infrastructure across the city.

The policy, set to remain in force until March 31, 2030, carries a budget of approximately ₹15,000 crore, equivalent to about $1.5 billion. It also provides significant subsidies for electric two- and three-wheelers, along with light goods electric vehicles. Additionally, electric cars priced up to ₹30 lakh will receive a 100% exemption on road tax and registration fees. The government's focus is on incentivizing pure EVs and developing a framework to discourage the registration of polluting vehicles, marking a decisive step towards making Delhi a pollution-free city.
