Delhi Government Extends EV Policy, Considers Major Revisions for EV 2.0

TL;DR

Delhi's government has extended its current EV policy until March 2026, while concurrently developing EV Policy 2.0, which includes proposals for banning new CNG autos and petrol/diesel/CNG two-wheelers in the coming years.

The Delhi Cabinet has approved an extension of the current Electric Vehicle Policy until March 31, 2026, or until a new policy is officially notified. Chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, this decision aims to maintain existing incentives for electric cars, e-rickshaws, and electric two-wheelers, while allowing for comprehensive stakeholder consultations on the upcoming EV Policy 2.0.

The extension provides crucial time for the government to finalize the EV Policy 2.0, which proposes significant changes to accelerate electric mobility. Draft proposals include banning new CNG auto registrations from August 15, 2025, and new petrol, diesel, and CNG two-wheeler registrations from August 15, 2026. Additionally, the new policy is expected to promote EVs under ₹25 lakh for subsidies, while costlier models would incur full taxes.

Further planned initiatives under EV Policy 2.0 encompass the development of battery recycling chains, establishment of swappable battery stations, and increased support for electric buses for last-mile delivery services. These measures are designed to strengthen the EV ecosystem, target 95% new registrations as EVs by 2027 in some drafts, and support job creation while aligning with Delhi's 2030 net-zero ambitions.
