Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Gear Up for Joint EV Debut in India

TL;DR

Maruti Suzuki's eVitara and Toyota's Urban Cruiser EV are set for a near-simultaneous launch in India, sharing platforms and offering competitive electric SUV options.

Maruti Suzuki is poised to introduce its first all-electric SUV, the eVitara, in India in the coming weeks, offering two battery options—49 kWh and 61 kWh—with the larger promising a range of up to 543 kilometers on a single charge. The electric SUV will be built on the Heartect-e platform and feature a front-wheel-drive configuration, delivering 172 bhp and 193 Nm of torque with the larger battery pack.

In a parallel development, Toyota is set to launch its inaugural electric vehicle in the Indian market, the Urban Cruiser EV, around January 19. This model will share its underpinnings with the Maruti eVitara, offering similar battery specifications (48.8 kWh and 61.1 kWh) and an anticipated range of up to 500 kilometers. The Urban Cruiser EV is expected to compete with other forthcoming electric SUVs like the Hyundai Creta EV and Tata Curvv EV upon its release.
