Electric vehicle adoption in India is gaining substantial momentum, with EV sales nearly doubling their share in the total passenger car market during the first half of fiscal year 2026. Data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) indicates that EVs now constitute approximately 5% of all passenger vehicles sold, a considerable rise from 2.6% at the close of FY25. This surge translates to 91,726 units sold in the first six months of FY26, a 108% year-on-year increase from 44,172 units in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Leading this robust growth are key players like JSW MG Motor and Tata Motors, which have reported strong sales figures for their electric portfolios. Notably, JSW MG's Windsor SUV achieved sales of over 50,000 units within a year of its launch, marking one of the fastest scale-ups for an EV model in India. Luxury brands such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz are also experiencing significant traction, with BMW India reporting its highest-ever EV sales between January and September 2025, contributing to 21% of its total sales.
Industry experts anticipate that the market share for electric vehicles could surpass 7% by the end of the current year. The combined share of EVs and hybrids is projected to reach 30% within the next decade, indicating a long-term shift towards greener mobility solutions in the Indian automotive landscape. This acceleration is attributed to a wider array of models, improving charging infrastructure, and growing consumer acceptance.
