TL;DR
India's EV market is projected for massive growth, reaching $191 billion by 2034, driven by increasing sales, government support for infrastructure, strong investments, and rising exports.
India's electric vehicle (EV) market is on a trajectory of significant expansion, with projections indicating a market size of $191.04 billion by 2034, growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 54.94 percent. This robust growth is transforming India into a pivotal economic driver, with EV sales surging 46-fold from approximately 50,000 units in 2016 to 2.3 million units in 2025.
The country's EV penetration has remarkably increased, from about one-fifth of global levels in 2020 to over two-fifths in 2024, primarily propelled by motorized two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The government aims for 30 percent of all vehicle sales to be electric by 2030, supported by plans for 1.32 million charging stations by the same year to strengthen the ecosystem.
Investment in the sector remains strong, attracting over $1.4 billion in FY25, a 27 percent increase from 2024. EV manufacturers secured the majority of this funding, with Delhi emerging as a leading city for EV investments. Furthermore, India is becoming an exporter of electric vehicles, with exports rising from $1.2 million in 2020 to $84 million in 2024, demonstrating its growing role in global electric mobility.
