India's Electric Passenger Vehicle Sales Surge Past 30,000 Units in August

TL;DR

Electric passenger vehicle sales in India exceeded 30,000 units in August 2026, showing 51% YoY growth, with Tata Motors leading the market as cumulative sales cross 200,000 for the year.

India's electric passenger vehicle (e-PV) market maintained its rapid expansion in August 2026, with retail sales crossing the 30,000-unit mark for the third consecutive month. A total of 30,418 electric cars and SUVs were registered, reflecting a robust 51% year-on-year growth compared to August 2025. This strong performance, led by Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and JSW MG Motor, brings cumulative January-August sales to 215,871 units.

While August sales saw a slight month-on-month dip of 12% from July 2026's record of 34,454 units, the overall trajectory remains highly positive. Market leader Tata Motors delivered 13,070 electric vehicles, securing a 43% market share. Mahindra held the second position with 6,464 registrations, accounting for 21.5% of the market. The continued strong demand suggests that India's e-PV sector is on track to achieve record annual sales of approximately 350,000 units in CY2026.
