India Grapples with EV Charging Infrastructure Lag Despite Soaring Adoption

TL;DR

India's rapidly growing electric vehicle market is facing significant challenges with its charging infrastructure, which is lagging behind EV adoption and struggling with operational reliability.

Despite India crossing the significant milestone of over 10 million registered electric vehicles (EVs) by late July 2026, the country's public charging infrastructure is struggling to keep pace, indicating a critical planning gap. Data from the Road Transport and Highways Ministry reveals an 11-fold increase in registered EVs over six years, while public charging stations numbered only 52,718 by March 2026.

This translates to roughly one charger for every 190 EVs, falling significantly short of the global benchmark of one charger for every 6 to 20 vehicles. Industry estimates suggest that India needs over 1.3 million public charging points by 2030 to achieve its ambitious 30% EV penetration target for private cars, requiring more than a 40-fold increase from the current installed base.

Adding to the challenge, approximately 18% of installed chargers are frequently non-operational, contributing significantly to user frustration. This highlights that successful EV charging projects are those meticulously planned to address usage and uptime concerns from the outset, rather than focusing solely on rapid hardware installation.
