Government Boosts EV Adoption with Comprehensive PM EDRIVE Scheme and FAME-II Success

TL;DR

The Indian government is accelerating EV adoption through the new PM EDRIVE Scheme, incentivizing millions of EVs and expanding charging infrastructure, building on the success of FAME-II.

The Indian government is actively promoting electric vehicle (EV) adoption through various initiatives, most notably the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM EDRIVE) Scheme. Notified in September 2024 with an outlay of Rs 10,900 crore, this scheme is designed to incentivize approximately 28.27 lakh EVs, encompassing electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, trucks, buses, and ambulances. It also includes provisions for EV public charging stations and the upgrading of testing agencies.

Building on the success of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) Scheme Phase-II, which concluded in March 2024, the government continues its commitment to sustainable mobility. FAME-II had a budgetary support of Rs 11,500 crore and facilitated the sale of around 16.71 lakh electric vehicles. As of February 7, 2026, 5,195 e-buses out of 6,862 sanctioned have been deployed, highlighting significant progress in electrifying public transport.
