Delhi Government Finalizes EV Policy 2026, Outlining Phased ICE Vehicle Registration

TL;DR

Delhi's EV Policy 2026 is now in effect, mandating phased registration of electric three-wheelers, light commercial vehicles, and two-wheelers by 2027-2028, alongside tax exemptions for EVs.

The Delhi Electric Vehicles (EV) Policy 2026 has been officially ratified, aiming to achieve clean mobility by 2030 and address the city's persistent air pollution. The policy, effective from June 30, 2026, to March 31, 2030, introduces phased restrictions on new registrations of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

Key provisions include granting 100% exemption from registration fees and road tax for EVs purchased and registered in Delhi, for cars priced up to INR 3 million. From January 1, 2027, only new electric three-wheelers and N1 goods carriers will be allowed for registration, followed by electric two-wheelers from April 1, 2028. The policy also encourages the establishment of private and public charging stations through digital operations and single-window clearances.
