Tata Motors Achieves Quarter-Million EV Sales Milestone in India, Outlines Ambitious Expansion

TL;DR

Tata Motors has sold over 250,000 electric vehicles in India, driven by the Nexon.ev's success, and plans a significant investment of up to INR 18,000 crore to expand its EV portfolio with new models like the Sierra.ev and Avinya, and aims for 1 million charging points by 2030.

Tata Motors has announced a significant achievement, surpassing 250,000 electric vehicle sales across India. This milestone underscores the growing mainstream acceptance of electric mobility in the country, with Tata's EV portfolio now accounting for approximately two-thirds of the Indian electric passenger vehicle market. The Nexon.ev alone has contributed over 100,000 units to these cumulative sales, solidifying its position as India's best-selling electric car. The company emphasized that electric vehicles are no longer a niche concept but an integral part of daily life for a substantial number of Indian consumers.

Looking ahead, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM) is set to invest between INR 16,000 to 18,000 crore (approximately $1.9 to $2.1 billion USD) by FY2030 to bolster its EV ecosystem. This strategic investment will focus on developing new EV-specific architectures, enhancing manufacturing capabilities, and expanding its product lineup. The company plans to introduce two new electric vehicles in 2026 under the Tata.EV brand – the electric rendition of the upcoming Sierra and a refreshed Punch.ev. Furthermore, Tata will launch its premium 'Avinya' electric vehicle range by late 2026, aiming to maintain a 45-50 percent market share amidst increasing competition.

A crucial component of Tata's expansion strategy involves a massive build-out of charging infrastructure. The company currently provides access to over 200,000 charging points, including home, community, and public chargers. It plans to expand this network to 400,000 points by 2027 and a remarkable 1 million charging points, with 100,000 public fast chargers, by 2030 through an open collaboration framework. This robust infrastructure development, coupled with localized high-voltage battery cell sourcing from Agrata's upcoming gigafactory, aims to strengthen India's self-sufficiency in EV technology.
