Supreme Court Explores Ban on Luxury Petrol and Diesel Vehicles to Propel India's EV Shift

TL;DR

India's Supreme Court has proposed banning luxury petrol and diesel vehicles as a starting point to boost electric vehicle adoption and reduce pollution.

The Supreme Court of India has suggested that the central government consider banning high-end luxury petrol and diesel vehicles as an initial step to accelerate the country's transition to electric mobility. This proposal aims to encourage a wider shift towards cleaner transport without significantly impacting the common populace, given that a small segment of the population owns such vehicles.

During a hearing on a public interest petition concerning the enforcement of India's electric mobility policy, a bench of justices observed that large and high-end electric cars are now readily available in the market. They suggested that restricting internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in the luxury segment could set a precedent for broader EV adoption.

The Attorney General, representing the government, acknowledged the issue and affirmed the government's support for such measures, noting that 13 ministries are involved in developing a comprehensive roadmap for electric vehicle promotion and phased implementation. The court has requested a detailed report on the progress and notifications issued to advance electric mobility.
