Automobile retail sales in India reached an unprecedented 24,23,201 units in August 2026, marking a robust 17.51 percent year-on-year growth. This impressive performance comes despite the seasonal monsoon slowdown and a shift in the festive calendar. FADA President Sai Giridhar noted that August 2026 was the biggest-ever August for Indian auto retail, although sales eased by 6.48 percent compared to a record July.
All major segments contributed to this growth. Passenger vehicle retail sales increased by 16.14 percent to 4,02,398 units compared to August 2025. Two-wheeler sales also saw a significant rise of 19.69 percent, reaching 17,14,610 units. Three-wheeler sales grew by 8.64 percent to 1,22,281 units, and commercial vehicles experienced a 14.45 percent increase in retail sales at 90,769 units. Rural demand played a crucial role, with non-farm segments accelerating and outpacing urban counterparts in passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and three-wheelers, demonstrating resilience despite a widening monsoon deficit.
