India's Ambitious EV Targets Could Dramatically Reduce Road Transport Emissions by 2050, ICCT Study Reveals

TL;DR

An ICCT study reveals that India could cut its road transport emissions by 50% by 2050 if its EV targets are met, supported by a strong domestic EV manufacturing base.

A new study by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) indicates that India has the potential to halve its road transport carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions by 2050 if it fully achieves its national and state-level electric vehicle (EV) targets. This finding is part of the fourth edition of Vision 2050, the ICCT's annual assessment of the global shift towards zero-emission vehicles.

The report highlights India's unique position, with nearly 80% of all EVs sold domestically already being manufactured within the country, mirroring advanced industrial economies like the EU and Japan. This strong domestic manufacturing base positions India favorably to scale up its clean transport sector without heavy reliance on imports. The electrification of heavy-duty vehicles is also identified as a key area for substantial future emissions reductions, a sector globally challenging to decarbonize.
