TL;DR

India's electric car penetration reached 4.5% in FY2026, with Telangana leading in adoption percentage while Maharashtra recorded the highest sales volume.

In the fiscal year 2025-26, India recorded a nationwide electric vehicle (EV) penetration of 4.5% within the passenger vehicle category. Out of 4,839,508 cars registered, 219,484 were electric. A report by EVreporter Intelligence highlights significant variations in EV adoption across different states. Telangana emerged with the highest EV penetration, reaching 11.6% with 19,810 electric four-wheelers sold (data till February 2026). Chandigarh followed with 9.1% penetration (2,014 units), and Delhi secured the third spot with 8.4% (16,986 units).

While some states showed high penetration percentages, others led in sales volume. Maharashtra registered the highest EV sales volume, with 34,066 units, accounting for 15.5% of all electric four-wheelers sold across the country. Karnataka secured the second-highest sales volume with 24,201 units, representing an 11% EV share in India's electric car sales, followed by Kerala with 20,226 units and a 9.2% share. These figures indicate a diverse landscape of EV adoption, influenced by regional policies, charging infrastructure, and consumer preferences.
