Hyundai India's Strategic Shift: Prioritizing Export of Automotive Technology and Platforms

TL;DR

Hyundai India's MD advocates for exporting automotive technology, platforms, and software, not just finished cars, showcasing the company's significant export growth and tech focus.

Hyundai Motor India's Managing Director and CEO, Tarun Garg, is advocating for a strategic shift in India's automotive industry, moving beyond merely exporting finished cars to focusing on exporting the underlying technology. Garg suggests the next evolution should involve exporting vehicle platforms, software, engineering expertise, components, and comprehensive mobility systems. This vision underscores the increasing value of intellectual property and technological capabilities in the modern automotive landscape.

Highlighting Hyundai's current export achievements, the company shipped 190,125 vehicles in FY2025-26, marking a 16.4 percent year-on-year increase. In July 2026 alone, exports reached 21,150 units, representing a 31.4 percent rise and Hyundai's highest monthly export figure in over 100 months. Hyundai has cumulatively exported more than 3.9 million vehicles from India to approximately 150 countries. The concept of 'exporting a platform' encompasses the fundamental architecture, electrical and electronic systems, battery layouts, power electronics, software, connected services, testing methodologies, and the engineering knowledge required to adapt these to diverse global markets. Hyundai's Bluelink connected-car ecosystem, for instance, is powered by millions of lines of code, demonstrating the growing technological sophistication embedded in modern vehicles.
