TL;DR

India approves 4,874 EV chargers with ₹503.86 crore outlay under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme to build a nationwide charging infrastructure.

The Government of India has approved the installation of 4,874 electric vehicle (EV) chargers across various states and CPSEs under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme, with a total financial outlay of ₹503.86 crore. This announcement was made during a National Conference on "Enabling Nationwide EV Charging Infrastructure under PM E-DRIVE Scheme" held in Bengaluru on May 12, 2026. The Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, reiterated the government's commitment to creating a modern and reliable EV charging ecosystem.

The PM E-DRIVE Scheme, with an overall outlay of ₹10,900 crore, aims to promote electric mobility and support EV ecosystem development across multiple segments. It provides demand incentives and infrastructure support for electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws), electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws), e-cars, e-buses, and e-trucks. Approximately 24.79 lakh e-2Ws and 3.16 lakh e-3Ws are proposed to be supported under this initiative.

The approved charging proposals include major Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) such as HPCL, IOCL, and BPCL, alongside states like Karnataka, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, and Telangana. The Ministry of Heavy Industries emphasized that coordinated efforts between the Central Government, State Governments, BHEL, Charge Point Operators, and industry stakeholders are crucial for creating an efficient charging ecosystem to support India's transition to clean mobility and achieve its Net Zero emissions target by 2070.
