Electrified Vehicles Transform India's Luxury Car Landscape

TL;DR

Nearly half of all luxury car registrations in India are now electrified vehicles, indicating a rapid shift in buyer preferences towards BEVs and hybrids.

The Indian luxury car market is undergoing a significant transformation, with electrified vehicles rapidly becoming the preferred choice among premium car buyers. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrids, and plug-in hybrids now account for nearly half of all registrations in the country's high-end passenger vehicle segment. This marks a substantial increase from just three years ago, when electrified models represented roughly one in ten vehicles, highlighting a swift shift in consumer preferences within India's passenger vehicle industry.

Data from Jato Dynamics, cited by The Economic Times (ET), shows that electrified models constituted 49.1% of registrations in the passenger vehicle segment priced above ₹30 lakh during January-May 2026. Carmakers like Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and BMW are reporting a growing adoption of electric vehicles among luxury buyers, indicating that manufacturers are expanding their portfolios across various electrified powertrain options to align with evolving market demands.

BMW India, for example, reported a 78% year-on-year increase in EV sales during the first half of 2026, with EVs now making up 26% of the company’s total sales, up from 21%. This trend signifies that the Indian luxury car market is increasingly mirroring global preferences for sustainable and technologically advanced mobility solutions.
