Delhi Government Extends Current EV Policy, Seeks Public Input for EV Policy 2.0

TL;DR

Delhi government extends its current EV policy until March 2026 and is seeking public input for EV Policy 2.0, which proposes significant new regulations and incentives for electric vehicles.

The Delhi Cabinet has approved an extension of its existing Electric Vehicle Policy until March 31, 2026, or until the notification of a new policy, whichever comes first. This decision ensures the continuation of incentives for e-cars, e-rickshaws, and e-two-wheelers, providing stability for the capital's growing EV ecosystem.

Under the current policy, Delhi has seen over 86,000 EV registrations since 2020, with new vehicle sales reaching a substantial 17.4% EV penetration by May 2024. The extended policy also facilitates comprehensive stakeholder consultations on the draft EV Policy 2.0, which proposes significant changes.

Key proposals for EV Policy 2.0 include a ban on new CNG auto registrations from August 15, 2025, and new petrol/diesel/CNG two-wheeler registrations from August 15, 2026. The draft also promotes subsidies for EVs priced under ₹25 lakh, plans for battery recycling chains, swappable battery stations, and boosts for e-buses in last-mile delivery, all aimed at achieving 95% new EV registrations by 2027 and aligning with Delhi's 2030 net-zero ambitions.
