Ashok Leyland, a prominent Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer and the flagship of the Hinduja Group, has initiated the development of a new greenfield battery pack manufacturing facility in Pillaipakkam, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This strategic project involves an investment of ₹400-500 crore and is aligned with the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy 2023 and India's broader vision for achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
The facility is crucial for localizing EV battery pack production, thereby strengthening India's electric mobility supply chain and fostering employment and advanced skill development in the region. Dheeraj Hinduja, Executive Chairman of Ashok Leyland, emphasized that this move is a significant step in the company's electric mobility journey, complementing its existing range of electric commercial vehicles developed with subsidiary Switch Mobility.
