TL;DR
India's EV charging network has grown to over 29,000 stations, but the utilization of allocated government funds for public charging infrastructure remains notably slow.
India's electric vehicle charging infrastructure has expanded significantly, now encompassing 29,151 charging stations across the nation as of December 2025. This includes 8,805 fast-charging stations and 20,346 slow-charging stations, according to recent parliamentary information.
The government has made substantial financial commitments to support this expansion, allocating ₹2,000 crore under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme for pan-India deployment of EV charging infrastructure. Furthermore, the second phase of the FAME India scheme, with an outlay of ₹11,500 crore, supported the sale of over 1.67 million EVs and sanctioned 6,862 e-buses. Oil marketing companies have also contributed by installing 8,932 public charging stations.
Despite these extensive efforts and allocations, the utilization of funds specifically for public charging infrastructure has been slow. Approximately 31% of the funds earmarked for public charging stations under the FAME India Phase II scheme remain unspent. Moreover, no funds have been utilized from the ₹2,000 crore allocated for EV public charging stations under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme. These delays pose challenges to the full realization of India's EV infrastructure goals.
