India Greenlights Advanced Driver Assistance Systems by Removing Spectrum Licensing Requirements

TL;DR

India has removed spectrum licensing for car safety and self-driving systems (ADAS), aligning with global standards to boost adoption and reduce road fatalities.

In a significant move to enhance road safety and promote automotive technology, the Indian government has removed licensing requirements for radio spectrum used by crash-avoidance and self-driving systems in vehicles. This policy change eliminates a major commercial barrier for automakers looking to deploy advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving technologies in India.

The government waived license requirements for radar sensors in the 77GHz to 81GHz frequency band and systems in the 5.9 GHz band, which facilitate vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. This alignment with global standards used in the U.S. and the European Union will allow carmakers to use standardized hardware, reducing costs and accelerating the adoption of premium safety features in a wider range of vehicles, including more affordable models.
